Professional Certification

Certification defines professionalism.

In Community Economic Development, a solid foundation of theory and practice is crucial, and professional certification plays a vital role in building that foundation.

The letters accompanying your name convey a powerful message about the expertise you bring to the table.

Elevate your career with professional certification.

Certification - Your gateway to professional growth.

Did you know? A recent survey shows certified economic development professionals enjoy salaries on average 20% higher than their non-certified counterparts.

Certification is not just a label. It is a commitment to your professional development that showcases your dedication to both personal growth and the advancement of your chosen field. Canadian economic development professionals have multiple certification pathways. Partnering with EDA opens doors to the Canadian designation (Ec.D.), the international designation (CEcD), or both. Re-certification is non-negotiable in Canada. Staying current is key.

Every three years, Certified Economic Developers must showcase their sustained competence through continuing education, including accredited programs. Exciting news for EDA's CEDTP participants is that our courses earn you points towards the Ec.D. designation.

Ready to take your career to new heights?  Certification is your stepping stone there.

EDA has developed visual pathways to help you better understand the process of professional certification for each designation:

CEcD- International Economic Developers Council (IEDC)

Visual pathway for CEcD designation

In March 2015, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between IEDC and EDA. The MOU commits both parties to developing and delivering training programs for Canadian economic development professionals wishing to become IEDC Certified Economic Developers (CEcDs).

Visit the IEDC Website for certification details.

Ec.D.- Economic Developers Association of Canada (EDAC)

Visual pathway for the Ec.D. designation

Certification of an individual is carried out by a Certification Panel responsible to review and judge applications for certification. EDAC members are eligible to write the Ec.D. exam to become a Certified Economic Developer once the required 45 points have been accumulated and reviewed/verified by EDAC’s CEO.

Visit the EDAC website for more details.
