    Agriculture Minister Verlyn Olson will highlight Alberta’s actions to strengthen agriculture and rural development at the Legislative Ag Chairs Summit in Florida in January.

    The annual summit, organized by the State Agriculture and Rural Leaders, brings together key industry representatives and elected officials from across Canada and the United States to discuss agriculture and rural issues, legislation and policy. Minister Olson has been invited to make a presentation about Alberta’s Rural Economic Development Action Plan.

    “The summit is an important opportunity to share details about the concrete steps Alberta is taking to support rural development and the role agriculture will have in driving our future economic growth. The event is also a valuable forum to speak candidly about pressing issues affecting the agriculture sector like trade barriers.”

    Verlyn Olson, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development

    During the summit, Alberta will continue to advocate for changes to the U.S. government’s mandatory Country of Origin Labelling (COOL) measures. These measures are creating unnecessary additional costs for the livestock industry by requiring that meat derived from animals born, reared or slaughtered outside the U.S. be labelled to indicate the countries involved. The recent World Trade Organization ruling that COOL is a violation of American trade obligations is currently under appeal.

    Other summit agenda items include agricultural sustainability, water quality, animal health, and renewable energy.

    In addition to other provincial agriculture ministers, Canada’s Ambassador to the United States, Gary Doer, will be part of the Canadian delegation and speaking at the event. The Canadian delegation also includes representation from the Canadian Cattlemen’s Association and the Canadian Pork Council.

    The summit runs from January 2-4 in Clearwater, Florida.

    Canada’s prosperity and quality of life depend on a vast network of public infrastructure – from roads and highways, to bridges, transit systems, water and wastewater infrastructure, ports, airports and recreational and cultural facilities. Investments in Canada’s public infrastructure improve productivity and quality of life, and create jobs, growth, and long-term prosperity from coast to coast to coast.

    The government announced an additional $5.8 billion dollars in infrastructure projects across the country in areas such as heritage, First Nations education, defence, borders, research facilities, harbours, transportation, and search and rescue. This includes:

    • $2.8 billion to support infrastructure improvements to heritage, tourism, waterway and highway assets located within national historic sites, national parks, and national marine conservation areas across Canada;
    • $500 million for the repair and construction of on-reserve schools;
    • $452 million to repair and upgrade Canadian Armed Forces facilities;
    • $440 million to expedite the replacement of border infrastructure;
    • Approximately $400 million to maintain, upgrade and construct federally-owned buildings and other assets across Canada;
    • $380 million for major repairs and upgrading of federal laboratories and research facilities;
    • $288 million for repair and maintenance of small craft harbours;
    • $204 million to support enhancements to federally-owned and operated airports as well as improvements to VIA Rail Canada Inc.’s rail infrastructure;
    • $191 million to undertake renewal and repairs of heritage and museum sites; and,
    • $183 million for the repair and procurement of vessels and small craft for the Canadian Coast Guard and Fisheries and Oceans Canada to support activities including search and rescue, science, and conservation.

    This long-term commitment to building and maintaining world-class infrastructure will create jobs and improve the quality of life of all Canadians.

    Alberta’s Immigrant Nominee Program (AINP) is now full for 2014, as all 5,500 certificates for the year have been issued.

    The certificates allow workers, along with their spouse and dependent children, to be nominated by the Government of Alberta for permanent residence in Canada.

    Provincial nominees may then apply for permanent residence to the federal government.

    “Alberta’s challenge remains finding permanent workers for permanent jobs. We need to meet our growing economic needs by training Albertans, and attracting workers from across the country and around the world. While the federal government currently caps the amount of people Alberta can nominate, we continue to work with them to find long-term solutions that better respond to Alberta’s labour demand.”

    Ric McIver, Minister of Jobs, Skills, Training and Labour

    Alberta remains a worldwide destination of choice for people to live, work and raise their families.

    • In 2013, Alberta welcomed 36,366 new permanent residents, accounting for 14.1 per cent of Canada’s total of 258,619.
    • That places Alberta third in the country for immigrants, after Ontario and Québec.
    • From 2006 to 2013, annual immigration to Alberta steadily increased from 21,000 to over 36,000.

    Alberta also continues to attract 100,000 newcomers annually.

    The AINP is an economic immigration program operated by the Government of Alberta in conjunction with the federal government. It supports Alberta's economic growth by attracting and retaining work-ready immigrants to the province, and is a vital tool in developing a permanent workforce.

    President of Treasury Board and Finance Minister Robin Campbell issued the following statement regarding his meeting with chief economists on December 4.

    “Yesterday, I had the opportunity to meet some of Canada’s top economists from the private sector to discuss Alberta’s economic outlook in preparation for Budget 2015.

    “As recent events have shown us, Alberta’s energy-based economy is subject to market swings and changes in the global economy, and predicting government revenue, especially our resource revenue, is not a perfect science.

    “That’s why we consult with outside expertsundefinedto test our assumptions and put our forecast through private-sector scrutiny. Our economic forecast has a direct impact on the province’s revenue outlook, so it is important that our forecast be as accurate as possible.

    “What I heard was that while Alberta’s economy is still on track, government needs to be prudent and make adjustments in response to lower energy prices.

    “Although we can’t control volatility in resource prices, there are things we can control, like government spending and making every effort to access new markets, which are priorities for this government.

    “Going forward, Albertans can be assured that government is taking all factors into account and seeking the best advice available as we work through the challenging process of budgeting for the next fiscal yearundefinedto be fiscally responsible while still delivering on key investments like schools, roads, hospitals, and increasing Albertans’ quality of life.

    Alberta Premier Jim Prentice and Quebec Premier Philippe Couillard took the first steps in building a strong partnership between the two provinces.

    "Today, I was delighted to meet with Premier Couillard at the Quebec National Assembly. We discussed a series of issues, infrastructure development, the national securities regulator as well as energy, environment and climate change. We agreed to work together on issues that impact the good of Canada.

    This meeting allowed me to share perspectives with Premier Couillard across a range of areas of shared interest including the environment, energy development and export, and the Energy East pipeline. As major energy producing provinces, Alberta and Quebec understand the importance of national energy infrastructure and are committed to responsible resource development that respects the environment and our communities.

    There are a number of ways that Alberta and Quebec can work together to advance our shared interests here.

    In addition, I look forward to attending Premier Couillard's summit on climate change in April and to welcoming Premier Couillard to Alberta in the coming months.

    Today's meeting was a positive step forward and I look forward to building this relationship.”
